If you determine you made an error or omitted something from a return after filing, you may need to file an amended return. You can use this IRS interactive tool to determine if you need to amend your return.
For more information about amending a prior-year tax return filed through a different tax filing product, the IRS helpline is available at 800-829-1040.
To amend a tax return filed here, you'll need to either file a DIY amended tax return by paper mail, or you may choose to visit a tax professional who can file an amendment for you. You can review this "Amended Returns" IRS article for more information about federal amendments. Column Tax doesn't offer amendment filing through our online product yet.
To paper file a DIY amendment, print a copy of the accepted return and print fillable Forms 1040, 1040X, and any other forms, worksheets, or schedules needed for your tax situation from the IRS Forms Library. Follow the instructions to manually complete these on paper. This IRS article has the address to mail your amendment and supporting documentation when you're ready. You can check here for the status of your amended return later.
You may also need to amend a state tax return. Please visit the state taxing authority website for your state for information on when and how to file a state amendment.
